I was born to be a disruption
A 5’10, caramel skin, 230 pound disruption
I disrupt society’s lie about beauty with the blackness that is me
An outlier…one that’s different from the rest
Even on my worst day they couldn’t touch me in their Sunday’s best
A disruptor..one that destroys, confuses and makes a mess
So confused on how I made I this far…going through life acing every single test
With hair that defies gravity and skin that absorbs the sun
This beauty that is me has unveiled your imperfections one bye one by one
You see the way my body contains different hues of the same color
Curvatures that defy mathematical measures
DNA filled with the experiences of my great ancestors
This blackness that is me is the beauty standard they don’t want us to discover
But here I am today unveiling this beauty that is me
Unveiling this blackness that is me
Showing the world that my being is a disruption to their standards of beauty
It was through simple tasks they tried to erase us
Like making foundations three shades too light to match our faces
Like saying my hair was disheveled in its natural state to then purposely where a messy bun with a smile on their face
To purposely dimmish my features, but yer pay to enhance theirs
Imitation is no longer a form of flattery when my corn rolls became boxer braids
Imitation is no longer a form of flattery when my permanent black beauty becomes your temporary aesthetic
No longer can others use our bodies for show and tell
It is now time that true black beauty be unveiled
