In a great episode of the IMX Podcast: Navigating Life, One Story at a Time, host Dr. Brittney Clinton spoke to Joy Cook, a powerful communicator, educator, and businesswoman.  The talk was full of insight, honesty, and clarity, and it followed the path of a woman who has changed what it means to speak with purpose in the digital era.

 From the beginning, Joy explained what strategic communication really is—not just a jargon, but a way to change how people think about things and get them to really participate. Joy said, "It's not just about getting your message out there."  "It's about making sure your message fits with who you are and what you believe in.  It's about utilizing your voice to get others to trust you, act, and make things better. She then spoke about a real-life event from her own life where clear, purposeful communication helped her handle a tough circumstance with grace and effect.

Joy spoke on how often people get marketing and public relations mixed up, which was one of the more eye-opening aspects of the debate.  She added, "Marketing is about promotion—telling people what you offer."  "PR is about positioning—how the world sees you.  You can utilize them together to make your tale stronger, even if they are separate tools. Joy spoke on how businesses frequently fail because they don't see the two fields as separate but complementary.  Her analysis wasn't just smart; it gave entrepreneurs and brands the leverage they needed. The talk became deeper in the latter part. 

Dr. Clinton asked Joy to think about the strength that helped her succeed. Joy remarked, "I've had doors close, chances fall through, and times when I doubted everything."  "But it wasn't just my talent that kept me going; it was my attitude."  It was the idea that I had something to say, something to make, and someone to change.

She spoke about a pivotal incident in her life, one of failure, that changed her course and led her to a higher purpose.  It was both humbling and encouraging how open she was.
