From Stereotypes to Self-Definition: Dr. Pamela Gurley’s Call to Claim Worth and Build Legacy

When Dr. Pamela Gurley released her first book, I Am Not A Stereotype: I AM H.E.R., in 2019, she never anticipated that one chapter would spark such a widespread demand for more. The Pedestal Philosophy—originally just one chapter in her book—would deeply resonate with readers, especially Black women who recognized the burden of being placed on impossible pedestals: always strong, always resilient, never allowed a moment of vulnerability…just be perfect.

“I didn’t expect that chapter to become the heart of so many conversations with me,” Dr. Gurley recalls. “People would reach out to me at events, on social media, and even through private messages, asking for more on this idea. Literally, telling me I needed to write a book on it. They wanted more; not just for them, but so many others.”

But as the years unfolded, Dr. Gurley’s own understanding of the pedestal evolved. What began as a framework for defining your life—reclaiming one’s humanity and rejecting unrealistic expectations—grew into something more powerful: an invitation to stand on your own pedestal and define your worth on your own terms.

Now, as she prepares to celebrate her 50th birthday, Dr. Gurley is bringing The Pedestal Philosophy to life as a standalone book—a gift to herself, and to the women who saw themselves in her story. The timing is deeply personal, but it’s also a message to her community: that growth, healing, and self-acceptance are journeys that never really end.

“Turning 50 is no ordinary birthday,” she says. “For me, it symbolizes a new chapter, a celebration of lived experience, and a moment to reflect on the journey that brought me here. I wanted this book to be my 50th birthday gift to myself—a testament to everything I’ve learned, survived, and grown through. It’s a way of honoring my story and the stories of countless women who have walked similar paths.”

Dr. Gurley’s journey to this milestone has been anything but linear. A military brat raised between Washington, DC and Georgia; she learned early how society tries to define you—especially as a Black girl maturing into a Black woman. “The expectations are everywhere based on how you look and what you like—like is it just too much to be human.”

Those experiences has shaped her life’s work. Whether in government, corporate leadership, authorship, or as the founder of Clark and Hill Enterprise and the Brown Girl and Brown Boy Literacy Foundation, Dr. Gurley has made it her mission to champion literacy, leadership, and authenticity.

Rooted in authenticity, the Pedestal Philosophy is not about perfection or performance. It’s about radical self-acceptance and the courage to claim space in a world that often asks women—especially Black women—to shrink themselves. It’s about sitting on your own pedestal, not to be above others, but to stand firmly in your truth.

This book is more than an expansion of a popular chapter—it’s a response to a collective need. “I want women to know you don’t have to live up to anyone else’s ideal of perfection,” Dr. Gurley says. “You can step onto your own pedestal, take ownership of your story, and still be powerful. In fact, you’ll be more powerful because you’re finally living in your own truth. And I feel like [somehow] that humbles you.”

As she prepares for the book’s release and the celebrations that will follow, Dr. Gurley is reflective about her journey and resolute in her mission. “I’m still evolving. I’m still learning what it means to live on my own pedestal. But I know this: we are all worthy of being seen, heard, and celebrated. Not someday but right now. And we are responsible for that.”

The Pedestal Philosophy launches November 8, 2025—Dr. Gurley’s 50th birthday. For more on her work and movement, visit www.iamdrpgurley.com or follow her on Instagram @iamdrpgurley.
