Who or What inspired you to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?


"Growing up, I was surrounded by women of Alpha Kappa Alpha. They were visible, well-dressed, well-spoken, and confident. One of my teachers, Mrs. Pyles, was an AKA. As I became older, I researched more about the organization and knew I wanted to be a member."


A trailblazer in sports media in the Washington DC Metropolitan area (DMV), Kelsey Nicole Nelson continues to create her own lane. The award-winning professional broadcast journalist and radio personality has covered some of the top sporting events on a local, state and national level for broadcast television and radio. Kelsey has covered some of the premier sporting events including the WNBA Finals, NBA Finals and the Super Bowl interviewing the world’s top athletes.


Before attending college, Kelsey was a standout student at Clarksburg High School in Clarksburg, Maryland. Kelsey was born and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. She is a proud DMV native.


Growing up, Kelsey was always strong in academics, earning academic scholarships to attend college and spent a great deal of time participating in community service and in athletics. Currently, Kelsey works as a freelance sports reporter, where she has become a fixture in the Washington, D.C. and national sports scene. For her work in sports, Kelsey was named the 2022 D.C. Media Person of the Year by the Washington Chiefs Inc. and for her work in the community she was most recently named a Luminary Award winner by the Thursday Network of the Greater Washington Urban League.


Currently, Kelsey is as a contributor and Co-Host for "Brother from Another" on Peacock TV/NBC Sports and an on-air host and contributor for Bally Sports National NBA coverage. For Bally Sports National Kelsey hosts "Last Night Tonight" alongside NBA Insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson. Kelsey is also a regular contributor to 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore discussing the latest in the NBA. Kelsey is also a brand ambassador for Natalia-Me-gan Hair & Beauty.


During the NFL season, Kelsey worked as a host for The Draft Network's weekly "Money Down" NFL sports betting Show and she is a co-host for Tony McGee's Pro Football Plus television show on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). During the 2020 NFL season, Kelsey was apart of the Washington Football Team's (now Washington Commanders) broadcast team where she served as a digital host for the team's Unfiltered series, hosting "The Fit," "The Life" and "Washington Unfiltered" shows which aired every Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Washington.

About the Divine Nine


The Divine Nine, formally known as, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative umbrella council composed of nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, and also referred to as Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs). The NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D.C., with Matthew W. Bullock as the active Chairman and B. Beatrix Scott as Vice-Chairman. NPHC was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois in 1937.


The council promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other media for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.


Each constituent member organization determines its own strategic direction and program agenda. Today, the primary purpose and focus of member organizations remains camaraderie and academic excellence for its members and service to the communities they serve. Each promotes community awareness and action through educational, economic, and cultural service activities.
