Independent R&B artist, songwriter, and producer Melvin Edmonds Jr. is ushering in a refined era of romance with his latest single, “Whisper My Name.” Released via Edmonds Music Inc., the record blends the emotional sincerity of ’90s soul with contemporary production — delivering what many are calling a modern grown-folks classic.
As the son of Melvin Edmonds of After 7 and nephew of legendary producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Edmonds Jr. carries a powerful musical lineage. Yet with “Whisper My Name,” he makes one thing clear — legacy is his foundation, not his ceiling. Forging his own independent path, he is building a new blueprint for modern R&B rooted in emotional maturity, intentional storytelling, and authentic love songs designed to last.
For Vision & Purpose Lifestyle Magazine, Edmonds Jr. opens up about the emotional space behind the record, the responsibility of honoring tradition while innovating forward, and why grown love deserves its own soundtrack in today’s music landscape.
Whisper My Name” feels intimate and intentional. What emotional space were you in when you created this record?
Melvin: I was in a reflective space — thinking about real love, not just attraction. I wanted to capture that quiet moment when two people truly see each other. I wanted to make a record that felt honest… something you could play when you’re holding somebody you really care about.
You’ve called the single “an experience.” What specific elements make this song more than just another R&B release?
Melvin: Not just the single itself, more so the legacy. The one I come from and building. It’s the storytelling, the arrangement, and the intention. The harmonies nod to the tradition of After 7, while the production feels modern and cinematic. It’s built for late-night drives, anniversaries, and memories. It’s meant to live with people.
Grown-folks R&B carries emotional maturity. Why is it important for you to bring real love songs back into the mainstream?
Melvin: Grown love deserves a soundtrack too. There are still couples fighting to stay together, still people believing in commitment. My uncle Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds taught us that love songs can last forever if they’re real. I want to give this generation something they can grow with. From my latest release “Love (Your Love Is Sumthin) to Whisper My Name” there’s plenty more to come.

The track blends ’90s groove with contemporary polish. How do you honor that classic era while keeping your sound fresh and current?
Melvin: I respect the emotion of that era. The melodies, the harmonies, the sincerity. But I tell my own story with today’s sound and production. It’s not about copying the past; it’s about carrying the feeling forward.
As someone born into a celebrated musical family, how do you balance honoring your legacy while confidently carving your own lane?
Melvin: Legacy is my foundation, not my ceiling. I’m proud to come from a musical family, but every note I sing is about building something new. My father and uncle gave me a blueprint — but my journey is about evolving it.
What did choosing the independent route teach you about ownership, patience, and long-term vision?
Melvin: Patience. Faith. Ownership. When you’re independent, you learn that every stream, every fan, every interview matters. Nothing is handed to you, so you appreciate it more. It taught me to think long-term and stay grounded.
What belief about love or relationships have you had to grow out of as you’ve matured — both as a man and as an artist?
Melvin: I had to grow out of thinking love was supposed to be easy. Real love takes work, forgiveness, and communication. As a man and as an artist, I’ve learned that vulnerability is strength.
When listeners press play on “Whisper My Name,” what do you ultimately want them to feel — and what does this song represent in the bigger picture of your career?
Melvin: I want them to feel peace. I want them to hold somebody closer. I want somebody to text their partner and say “I love you.” This song represents where I am right now, honoring where I come from while stepping into my own purpose.
What else would you like our readers to know at this time?
Melvin: This isn’t just a single, it’s the beginning of a movement to bring real love songs back. And the response so far from fans streaming “Love (Your Love Is Sumthin)” over 750K times on TikTok shows people are ready for it.
How can we keep up to date on social media?
