There’s something sacred about a first tattoo — a permanent story etched in skin, guided by trust and intention. For me, that story began with a soft hum of nerves, the scent of clean ink, and the steady presence of Tattoo Artist Jasmine Cosajay. As a “first timer,” I sought something small yet deeply symbolic — a four-leaf clover, its stem elegantly written with the word love, attaching the initials of the four individuals who have been my village, shaping the woman I am today. What began as a personal reflection of gratitude became a serene moment of transformation. Jasmine’s calm energy, professionalism, and artistry transformed what could have been a fleeting appointment into an experience that felt spiritual — one that left me yearning for future pieces that tell more stories through cute, peaceful symbolism.

Dr. Brittney Clinton:  You were the artist behind my very first tattoo — what was going through your mind when you realized you were marking such a meaningful ‘first’ for someone?

Jasmine Cosajay: It’s always an honor when someone chooses me for their first tattoo because it’s not just about the art, it’s about trust. Clients have their own stories. Sometimes that can be a spur of the moment decision, honoring someone or something, making a bold statement, or simply an act of self love. And because this will live with them forever, I try to make the experience calm, intentional, and meaningful.

Dr. Brittney Clinton: Every tattoo tells a story. How do you connect with clients to translate their emotions and stories into art that feels alive on the skin?

Jasmine Cosajay: I tend to focus on the feeling behind what they’re trying to express. Sometimes people don’t have all the words or they’re unsure of what they want but they have ideas/feelings they want to honor or release. I listen closely, not only to what they say but to what they feel. Once I understand that energy, I let the design flow intuitively. That’s how the piece becomes something that feels like them, not just looks like them.

Dr. Brittney Clinton: You split your artistry between Miami, North Carolina, and New York — how do each of these places influence your creative energy and the styles you design?

Jasmine Cosajay: Each city brings a different pulse. Miami gives me warmth and boldness — it reminds me to embrace vibrancy and feels more like a next level. North Carolina grounds me. It's where I find stillness and reset because this is where I started; this is home, it’s familiar. New York fuels my inspiration, structure, and ambition. The balance of those energies keeps my work centered. Detailed and soulful but intentional.

Dr. Brittney Clinton: What’s a current tattoo trend you secretly love—or one you think needs a total remix?

Jasmine Cosajay: I love seeing how the tattoo industry continues to evolve. Especially with styles like fine-line and minimal realism. There’s something powerful about how simple designs can hold deep meaning. But I also think social media has made some trends feel repetitive. I’d love to see more individuality. Pieces that feel connected to the person wearing them, not just what’s trending.

Dr. Brittney Clinton: Being a woman in the tattoo industry comes with its own edge and elegance. How do you bring both power and softness into your work and your brand?

Jasmine Cosajay: For me, power and softness naturally coexist. The strength is in the intention and the softness is in the connection. I aim to bring both into every piece — balancing precision with emotion, structure with flow. My focus is always to bring someone’s vision to life in a way that feels authentic to them. To capture their thoughts in something lasting.

Dr. Brittney Clinton: If you could describe your tattoo style as a music genre or mood, what would it be — and why?

Jasmine Cosajay: I’d say it’s somewhere between neo-soul and R&B — smooth, emotional, and intentional. Music is often described as therapy for the soul. It’s how people connect with themselves and express emotion. My art moves the same way. It’s fluid, expressive, and rooted in feeling. Every piece carries its own rhythm, only a little more permanent.

Interviewing Jasmine revealed what her clients already know — that her work is more than ink; it’s emotion made visible. Each design she creates feels intentional, intuitive, and timeless. For those seeking to tell their stories through subtle, soulful artistry, Jasmine Cosajay brings precision, passion, and peace to every session.
