“A therapist listens without judgment, understands without pretense, and shows compassion without condition.”
The road map to managing a healthy approach to achieving mental wellness is to be aware of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and to comprehend the impact they have on your well-being. Your wellness journey through life's obstacles can be facilitated by prioritizing activities and routines that promote mental well-being, such as exercise, adequate sleep, nutrition, and relaxation techniques.
The intentional establishment of a robust support network of friends, family, or professionals who can provide guidance, empathy, and assistance during difficult times fosters a mental sense of security, as it is recognized that there is someone who will be there to support me when necessary. The development of effective coping mechanisms to manage stress, setbacks, and life challenges in a healthy manner can mitigate significant setbacks, meltdowns, and isolation that occasionally occur when battling mental health wellness.
By establishing healthy boundaries in relationships and work-life balance to prevent exhaustion and maintain emotional resilience, there is a significant amount of room to avoid personal triggers that can indeed derail your mental state. An individual is motivated to maintain a healthy mindset by participating in activities that stimulate the mind, promote personal growth and development, and foster creativity. It is crucial to acknowledge when professional assistance is required and to pursue therapy or counseling to address mental health issues or concerns. This is because the brain is responsible for sending messages throughout the body to inform it of specific actions to take, when the body is in danger, and to regulate the psyche's reactions.
Consequently, it is crucial for those who aspire to challenge the current mental health epidemic to be deliberate in their mental health care. In general, mental health wellness is a continuous process that involves self-awareness, self-care, and self-improvement with the objective of attaining a fulfilled and well-balanced existence.
I am delighted to have the opportunity to interview Mr. Roger Hyman, a distinguished psychotherapist who elucidates his strategic approach to the operation and sustainability of the Hyman Counseling and Consulting private practice.
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Under supervision of a private practice, what techniques can you use to give self-care top priority and maintain a good balance between job and personal life?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “You have to make your own mental health a priority. I think the best clinicians are ones that have or are currently involved in therapy. One must also have clearly defined boundaries between work and personal. It is imperative to maintain a healthy work/life balance.”
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Which strategies have you found to be effective for preventing burnout and preserving personal well-being?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “Set aside time to engage in positive outlets and activities that provide stress relief and personal enjoyment. Incorporate meditation and imagery techniques to recenter your focus and maintain your energy. Maintain a workable and realistic caseload of clients so that you can deliver top quality psychotherapeutic services and not appear overwhelmed or hurried in your service delivery.”
Dr. Brittney Clinton: How do you stay current on developments in the fields of mental health and psychotherapy?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “I am a member of ACA (American Counseling Association), ACES (Association for Counselor Education and Supervision), and AMCD (Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development). My membership in these professional organizations help me maintain first hand up-to-date information about trends and changes within our profession. Additionally, attending national and regional conferences helps with my networking and maintaining a close pulse on developments within the mental health field.”

Dr. Brittney Clinton: For the aim of getting references, do you work professionally in groups or under contract with other experts or companies? If so, how can one maintain and control such bonds?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “By building up alliances and referrals from sources such as local hospitals, schools, community groups, and government agencies my practice has had the opportunity to grow exponentially. The quality of mental health services delivered and clients’ testimonies/ratings help to solidify the professional relationships with referral services.”
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Given market circumstances and customer financial capability, what direction would you provide in figuring competitive pricing?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “As a psychotherapist in this day and financial climate you have to think about sliding fee scales and some possible pro bono sessions for indigent consumers. By accepting all major forms of insurance as well as state Medicaid and Medicare helps to widen the number of potential clients that can receive psychotherapy services. Also educating clients about keeping their sessions and calling ahead of regulated rescheduling times will help them to remain clear of being discharged from practices for violating these regulations.”
Dr. Brittney Clinton: Which strategies have you found to be effective for keeping customers and maintaining a steady foundation of business?
Roger Hyman, LCMHC: “Doing community and neighborhood presentations about mental health and how the maintenance and proactive care of it equals physical health helps to bring potential clients in. Additionally, by providing consultation services on best practices and streamlining processes helps to provide an additional stream of income within my business. As a psychotherapist, you have to be willing to continuously reassess and rebrand yourself to align with the community’s needs as well as receiving adequate feedback from clients on satisfaction with services provided.”
